TO COMPARE THE EFFECT OF HYDRALAZINE AND LABETALOL IN LOWERING SEVERE HYPERTENSION IN PREGNANCY

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:- To compare the efficacy of intravenous labetalol and intravenous hydralazine in lowering severe hypertension in patients of preeclampsia and pregnancy induced hypertension.

STUDY DESIGN:- Retrospective randomized clinical study

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY:- Nishtar hospital, Bakhtawar Amin hospital and CMH hospital Multan from November, 2019 to august, 2020.

METHODOLOGY:- Seventy eight patients admitted in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department having preeclampsia or severe hypertension fulfilling the inclusion criteria, were enrolled in the study. The detailed data regarding maternal parameters was taken. The readings of systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure were taken before and after treatment. The mean fall in mean arterial pressure and time taken from for this was recorded. Data was analysed by using SPSS version 20. RESULTS:- The mean age of patients in hydralazine group(Group A) was 25.4 years while that of labetalol group (Group B) was 25.6 years. The average gestational age of Group A and B patients were 34 and 33 weeks respectively. The mean fall in mean arterial pressure with hydralazine group was 25.31± 4.3 while it was 28.69 ± 4.01with labetalol group with p value <0.001. The time required by Group A and B to achieve the target blood pressure was 25.56 ± 6.7and 22.41 ± 4.23 minutes respectively with p value <0.014. CONCLUSION:-  Our study favors the use of intravenous labetalol in preeclampsia and severe hypertension in pregnancy as it lowers mean arterial pressure more as compared to intravenous hydralazine.
